The restoration

Pertinent to the Department of Justice from 1844, stopped its prison destination, the castle was delivered to the Office for the Cultural and Environmental Heritage and, July 26th 1976, to the Superintendence for the Environmental, Architectural, Artistic and Historical Heritage of Puglia, that it programmed of it and it effected the restoration;  July 1st 1979 they began the cognitive investigations of survey of the immovable property, archivistic and bibliographical, premised organic and conclusive to the following operations of recovery.

They revealed fundamental, for the knowledge of the structures stratified of the castle, that the prison destination had hidden under a thick and homogeneous scabbard of plasters, some nineteenth-century plants compiled in 1835 from the provincial engineer of Waters and Roads Gaetano de George, during the first phase of the jobs of transformation in jail, when the castle still introduced a very similar aspect to that documented from a plastic wooden eighteenth-century, realized by Giovanni Carafa, duke of Noja and expert of fortifications, coming from the Museum of St. Martin in Naples and today in the Museum of Castle of Trani.

The restoration has restored to health the great structure, equipping her/it some necessary fittingses to the today's fruition, cleaned the blackened surfaces, eliminated the nineteenth-century that suffocated the inside and external spaces of it and they altered the clear profile of the curtains and the towers;  you/he/she has restored the existing native openings, the stair of the towers, the native path, first among the whole west access inside the castle, emptying the embankment except a last section, consolidated, which the sixteenth-century building of the crazy houses is set, in whose environments of floor earth has underlined the pillars of the parvis medium age, remained englobed in the walls of circle.

The restoration, effected with ministerial funds but above all thanks to a co-financing of the UE, the passage of the monument has made through the time legible, in the respect of the data survivors, without restorations of invention or attempts of anastylosis.

Today the rooms and the courtyards entertain concerts and conferences, exhibition and shows, but the true protagonist is the same castle, returned to himself and at his history.
